How to Choose the Best Wooden Shed

How to Choose the Best Wooden Shed

There are quite a few uses for wooden sheds, even though the most common are for storing such items as woodworking tools or gardening equipment. Some of these options are to use your shed as a playhouse for your kids, as a potting shed for your gardening, or simply as a mini-retreat. And, we could all use one of those.

There are many advantages to using wood as opposed to other materials such as plastic or metal. Wood has a natural comforting feeling you cant get from plastic (or even metal). And, an added benefit is that wood has a better insulating value over other materials that helps protect you and the items you store in it during the winter.

Size is one of the first things you should think about when you are considering a wooden shed. Knowing what you are going to put in it will help you make this determination. Leave a little extra room to grow for some more items you may not even be thinking about now. Just dont use the extra room to store junk you will probably never use in the future.

Also, when you are planning your shed, think about the height you will need as well. You may want to add shelves higher up or put items in the rafters for less frequently used items.

If you plan on using your shed as a playhouse, pool cabana, or a mini-retreat, then you should consider a shed that is divided into multiple rooms. You dont need a shed with multiple rooms if you are only going to use it for storage purposes.

The type of floor you pick for your shed is the next important consideration. Wood floor options that are built on a frame can usually be purchased separately from the rest of a wooden shed kit. Wood floors (or "skids") make it easy to slide the shed from one location to the next.

A concrete slab can be poured for your shed just like a house is built. Of course, this is a much more permanent floor than a wood skid. When you are finished building the shed, you can cover the floor with wood, stain it, paint it, or leave it the way it is.

There are literally hundreds (if not thousands) of design options available to you today on the internet. And, the best part, they come in a wide variety of sizes. But if you really want a custom shed then youll have to start with a good set of plans and at least one solid weekend of time. It wont be long until you have a new shed built in your own backyard.
